Weight Reduction Decreases Atrial Fibrillation, Symptom Severity

Weight reduction could help combat heart disease

Abed, B.Pharm., M.B.B.S., of the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia and colleagues evaluated the effect of a structured weight reduction program on atrial fibrillation symptoms. In the United States, the direct economic cost of atrial fibrillation is estimated at $6 billion annually. Although population aging is regarded as an important contributor, obesity may account for a substantial proportion of the increasing prevalence,” according to background information in the article. Whether weight reduction and cardiometabolic risk factor management can reduce the burden of atrial fibrillation has not been known.

The study was conducted between June 2010 and December 2011 among overweight and obese patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation. Patients underwent a median (midpoint) of 15 months of follow-up. Patients were randomized to weight management or general lifestyle advice. Both groups underwent intensive management of cardiometabolic risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, glucose intolerance, sleep apnea, and alcohol and garcinia cambogia reviews tobacco use).

Researchers Find Insulin Status an Important Determinant of the Positive Effect of Weight Reduction on Vascular Function

are now obese with 65 million additional cases estimated by 2030. While obesity confers serious health concerns and increased all-cause mortality, the vast majority of deaths are due to cardiovascular causes such as ischemic heart disease and stroke. Researcher prospectively followed 208 overweight or obese patients (BMI 25 kg/m2) receiving medical/dietary (48 percent) or bariatric surgical (52 percent) weight loss treatment during a period of approximately one year. They measured plasma metabolic parameters and vascular endothelial function using ultrasound at baseline and following weight loss intervention, and stratified analyses by median plasma insulin levels. They found that individuals with higher baseline plasma insulin levels (above median >12 uIU/ml), who had greater than 10 percent weight loss had significantly improved brachial artery macro-vascular flow-mediated vasodilation and micro-vascular reactive hyperemia. In contrast, vascular function did not change significantly in the lower insulin group (12 uIU/mL) despite similar degree of weight loss.

Insulin Status Is Important Determinant Of Weight Reduction On Vascular Function

Sleep, stress reduction may help weight loss

They found that individuals with higher baseline plasma insulin levels (above median >12 uIU/ml), who had greater than 10 percent weight loss had significantly improved brachial artery macro-vascular flow-mediated vasodilation and micro-vascular reactive hyperemia. In contrast, vascular function did not change significantly in the lower insulin group (?12 uIU/mL) despite similar degree of weight loss. In analyses using a five percent weight loss cut-point, only micro-vascular responses improved in the higher insulin group. “Our study has shown that insulin status is an important determinant of the positive effect of weight reduction on vascular function with hyperinsulinemic patients deriving the greatest benefit,” explained corresponding author Noyan Gokce, MD, FACC, associate professor of medicine at BUSM and Director of Echocardiography at BMC.

I don’t think so. Some loose more easily than others, but we garcinia cambogia extract all are capable of loosing weight if we try, or if the food/water supply is cut off for whatever reason. Usually we don’t stick to the weight lost regimen, and blame the “plan” instead of ourselves. Trustees Call For Mental-health Services

In September, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Police Department called on the provincial government to embrace a five-point plan that includes funding 300 locked-ward beds for severely mentally ill people. That citys police department said mental health problems have reached crisis proportions. Port Moodys police force has also dealt with an increase in mental health related calls in the last six years. According to the Port Moody Police Department, in 2007 the force dealt with 39 mental health/emotionally disturbed person calls. The number grew to 65 files in 2009, 119 files in 2010, 106 files in 2011 and 130 files in 2012.

Doctors protest possible cuts to mental health budget

What does the face of mental illness look like? It is surprisingly familiar. It is useful to think of mental health as a continuum. All of us experience challenges from time to time; depression, anxiety, perhaps a roller coaster of emotions.

Mental health diseases affect our communities of worship, too

Doctors who signed the letter are urging the health authority not to cut any of the mental health funding. “I’m suggesting that they shouldn’t be cutting back on mental health services, period, particularly at this time,” said Termansen. Health Officers Group Voices Concern Over Vaccine Exemption Form

California law: Health workers must sign for kids to skip vaccines

Will a separate religious exemption undermine the form’s intent? (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times) Also By Eryn Brown November 1, 2013, 3:08 p.m. Two days after the California Department of Public Health released its new form requiring parents who want to exempt their kids from required vaccinations to speak with a doctor, an association of public health officers is voicing concern over an option on the form that allows parents to easily bypass the requirement. A box parents can check allows them to skip talking to their doctor if they vouch that they’re “a member of a religion that prohibits me from seeking medical advice or treatment from authorized healthcare practitioners.” The new form is an outgrowth of the passage of AB 2109. That bill, signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2012, sought to limit the number of people who chose against vaccinating their children by requiring such parents to speak with a medical provider first.

Q&A: Explaining the Widespread Health-Plan Cancellations

Long Waits About 8.6 million people visited the federal website in the first week, and most were greeted by long waits that prevented many from registering. Department of Health and Human Services officials have said capacity is being added to the system and upgrades are being made to the software code, though as of two days ago error messages were still being displayed. Jeffrey Zients, the former Office of Management and Budget official that Obama appointed Oct. 22 to help sort out the websites troubles, has said the site will work smoothly by the end of November.

Sticker Shock Follows Health Insurance Cancellations

Its a new market with new rules, said Karen M. Ignagni, president of Americas Health Insurance Plans, the industry trade group. New policies need to be created. Another reason is that some insurers have decided that certain plans or certain regions arent profitable.A spokesman for Cigna Corp. said that 1,500 of the insurance companys customers are having their plans canceled in locations where we have very little membership. Continuing to offer old plans in addition to new ones would also be impractical for insurers, according to Paula Wilson, a broker in Temecula, Calif. An insurance company would have to retool its entire [information-technology] system to comply with the law.

Health Site Flaws Test Democrats’ Unity as Attacks Rise

Sebelius on Healthcare.gov: Hearing in a Minute

It’s unclear how many individual plans are being canceled – no one agency keeps track. But it’s likely in the millions. Insurance industry experts estimate that about 14 million people, or 5 percent of the total market for health care coverage, buy individual policies. Most people get coverage through jobs and aren’t affected. Many states require insurers to give consumers 90 days’ notice before canceling plans. That means another round of cancellation letters will go out in March and again in May.
